IcedTea for Debian

IcedTea is the 100% free variant of Sun's OpenJDK. I have ported the existing Ubuntu package 'icedtea-java7' to Debian. My inofficial package is currently available at http://people.debian.org/~twerner/ for the architectures amd64 and i386. I do not plan to upload it to Debian.

Does it have some problem that makes it unsuitable for Debian, or do you just not want to maintain it in Debian?

I have found one technical problem: I was not able to built the 1.5 prerelease from Ubuntu. That is why I went back to the 1.4 release of IcedTea. But the reasons for not uploading to Debian are not technical problems: difficulties in communication/collaboration with the current (Ubuntu) maintainers.

How about making a fork? :)

I'm also not up to date about the state of this work in Debian itself, I've been thinking quite a bunch of people is working on getting this packaged for Debian - so the support of this Fork could be available...

The package has been uploaded to unstable yesterday. It will hopefully be available in Debian after new processing.

Cheers,
Torsten

It still doesn't seem to be in unstable, nor in NEW. Was there some problem with it?

It is in the NEW queue: http://ftp-master.debian.org/new/openjdk-6_6b08-1.html
